Step-by-step procedure for removing and reinstalling, replacing a new thermostat for vehicles with fuel injection and carburetor engines. Tips before starting work.

Tips before starting the procedure

  1. Before proceeding with the removal of the thermostat on a VAZ 2110-2111 car, be sure to make sure that it has completely cooled down after operation.
  2. The thermostat is removed when it is subsequently replaced by an unstable temperature regime of the engine (overheating, insufficient heating). For this procedure, a complete drain of the coolant is not necessary.
  3. To check the condition of the thermostat, start the car engine and touch the lower radiator hose, at first it should remain cold, and only after the coolant temperature reaches about 90 degrees, the hose will begin to heat up a little. In the absence of such a reaction to the manipulations carried out, remove the thermostat from the car and check its operability, if defects are detected, it must be replaced with a new one.

Replacing the thermostat on a fuel injection engine:

1. For more comfortable conditions for performing the above task, you will need to remove the battery.

2. Remove the plug from the expansion tank and unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator. Drain the liquid from there and screw the plug back in.

3. Next, loosen the tightening on the nozzles of the thermostat socket cover of the two hose clamps.

4. You will also need to remove the second rear hose clamp located on the water pump inlet pipe.

5. Remove the front hose from the nipple.

6. When removing the rear hose, slide it over the conductive pipe of the water pump.

7. Then unscrew the three screws securing the cover, then remove it and the thermostat. 8. The lid should be clamped in a vice, be careful and careful when performing this action. The vise should be pre-installed with pads or jaws to avoid damage to the aluminum lid.

9. Press the thermostat fixing plate downward, while overcoming the spring force. Turn the plate in any convenient direction, disengage it from the grooves. Remove the thermostat from the cover.

How to check a new thermostat?

10. Before you start installing a new thermostat, carry out the following steps over it: lower it into hot water, approximately 78-80 degrees and heat the water to 87-90 degrees, while constantly stirring it.

11. With a normally functioning thermostat at this temperature, the stem of the silicone element should begin to extend. If this did not happen, then it is not suitable and you need to buy another one.

12. Correct installation of the thermostat is carried out in the reverse order of removal. When installing, pay attention to the rubber ring in the socket groove. If it turns out to be torn, deformed, or has lost its elasticity, replace it.

13. The last point in our work will be filling the cooling system with liquid. It should be poured up to the upper edge of the expansion tank mounting strap (into the expansion tank). Then close the plug and start the engine.

One of the important points is to check that there is no coolant leakage, which can occur through the connections of the device nozzles. Warm up the vehicle engine at idle speed to normal operating temperature to avoid air pockets in the system.

If you have a carburetor engine installed on a car, we offer you another way to do this work.

Removal and correct installation of the thermostat on a carburetor engine:

1. Remove the cap from the expansion tank and unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator. Drain the liquid from there and screw the drain plug back.

2. Disconnect the three hoses from the thermostat housing after loosening it.

3. Next, you need to loosen the clamp and remove the device together with the hose.

4. After all the above steps, warm up the water to 80 degrees and lower the thermostat into it. As with an engine with a fuel injection system, warm up the water together with the thermostat, while constantly stirring it to 87–90 degrees.

5. At this temperature, the main valve of the thermostat will start to open. If this discovery did not happen, you will need to replace it. Installation takes place in the exact reverse order of removal.

Breakdown symptoms: constantly two strips of temperature, on the BC the temperature rises evenly and rests at ~ 76 ° C.

What is done. The contacts of the temperature sensor were cleaned, according to the BC readings, the temperature increased to 86 ° C and 4 stripes began to appear periodically. But since the temperature rises linearly, the temperature sensor obviously does not work. There is only one way out of the situation - to change it to a new one. Chose Gates TH23389G1. After the replacement, on the BC you can see how the temperature reached 93 degrees, then dropped to 73 (the thermostat opened), and began to rise.
