Information about the appearance of the new, compact hatchback was on the Internet long before its appearance. Meanwhile, the new Peugeot 208 was officially shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019. As for me, despite the compact dimensions of the car, the design of the exterior and interior has been significantly updated.

As for the characteristics, the choice of the buyer will be offered petrol, diesel and electric versions. Despite the power unit, there will be practically no external differences, except for the nameplates denoting the complete set of the new Peugeot 208. Now let's take a closer look at the new product, compare it with the previous generation of the hatchback.

Exterior of the new Peugeot 208

To say that the appearance of the new Peugeot 208 has changed minimally, this is nothing to say. The hatchback shines with modern touches and an already ingrained new exterior design. Despite the fact that this is a compact car, the designers gave it a sporty style and a little evil character. As for me, what stands out the most is the front, which is decorated with vertical LED running lights in the form of "scars". The optics of the new Peugeot 208 hatchback are three vertical LE stripes and a lens that is responsible for the high beam.

The central front end is highlighted by a large, open radiator grille, with a branded lion emblem and a panel for sensors, sensors. An interesting moment fell on the share of the electric model, in addition to the grille partially painted to match the body color, the company emblem will change color at different angles, from chrome to bright green. To emphasize the aggressive nature of the Peugeot 208, the very bottom of the front bumper was decorated with a small V-shaped additional grille. In addition, on the end of the hood, the designers added a 208 nameplate indicating the model of the car. Less noticeable details include an updated hood with original relief and a heated windshield.

From the side, the new Peugeot 208 looks an order of magnitude more attractive than the previous generation of the hatchback. Whatever the equipment or unit, the car will be sporty, smart, with an individual character. To give an even more unique and special character, the designers decorated the front and rear wheel arches with black plastic linings. They stand out best on bright body colors.

The very sporty character of the new Peugeot 208 is emphasized by a spoiler at the top of the rear window. From the side, the hatchback resembles a rally racing car. On the decorative side, the black edging of the glasses, the black B-pillars and the black mirrors can also be noted. By the way, it is worth noting that the designers did not begin to transfer the mirrors to the door panel, as many manufacturers do, and as it was in the previous generation, but left them in the corner of the front windows. On the functional side, the standard set will include heating, LED repeaters of turns, electric adjustment and automatic folding.

As for the body color of the new Peugeot 208, there is not a lot of information here, the buyer is available:

Stylish light-alloy 17 ″ wheels are a nice addition to the design of the side section, although due to the space in the arches, it will be possible to install it on 18 ″. Many will say that for a compact and small hatchback, large rims are only a plus, especially if they were initially thought out from the factory.

At the rear, the Peugeot hatchback looks even more stylish and modern, in addition, there is practically nothing in common with the previous generation. The designers have stretched a black stripe across the entire width, which at the edges passes into the hind feet. When compared with the previous generation, there are significant differences. For example, the trunk lid has received a greater forward slope, and the rear itself has become more massive. The designers have completed the rear bumper of Peugeot with a diffuser, a repeater stop and a pair of foglights.

I would like to note that depending on the engine and equipment, the corresponding nameplates will be installed on the rear pillars. Similarly, the manufacturer promises to select body shades and special exterior packages to diversify the choice of the buyer. Most likely, they will offer a package of chrome, sports elements and other little things, the overall appearance will remain unchanged.

The last detail of the Peugeot 208 exterior that is worth considering is the roof. Many said that it would be solid or with a hatch in the front, but, as it turned out, it was panoramic. Depending on the configuration, it can be blind or with a sliding front part. The back of the roof was decorated with a whip antenna. As for me, nowadays it would be possible to install an antenna in the form of a shark fin. For a fee, they will offer to install side rails on the roof for attaching an additional trunk.

Having considered the appearance of the new Peugeot 208 hatchback, we can confidently say that it has changed significantly in comparison with the previous generation. The appearance has become more modern, fit, with a special character. That and if we take the design as a whole, then it has become significantly better. Despite the fact that the car is compact, there are already many people who want to buy it. Rumor has it that the most demand will be for the charged version of the GT.

If the appearance still somehow resembles the Peugeot model, then the interior of the 208 has undergone significant changes. Most of the improvements were made to the front panel and the driver's seat. If the external differences between the trim levels are minimal, then in the cabin they are significant. An example of this is the display of the multimedia system, in the basic configuration it is 5 ″, the rest of the configurations will receive a display of 7 ″ and 10 ″. According to company representatives, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink served as the basis for multimedia.

Another plus is that the database already contains TomTom navigation with 3D maps. The main console of the Peugeot 208 looks more like a sports car. Two rectangular air ducts, elongated buttons for controlling security systems, as well as an ashtray, a recess for wireless charging and a pair of USB ports. In the previous generation, there was nothing like that, a minimum of functionality and convenience. From the decorative moments of the new Peugeot, I would note a small slope below the display of the multimedia system, the Start / Stop button of the engine was also located here, as well as glossy inserts around the perimeter of the front panel.

Following the front panel, a good update fell on the central tunnel between the front seats of the Peugeot 208. The lever of the updated transmission (more reminiscent of a BMW), a pair of cup holders, an electromechanical handbrake and an emergency brake button were placed in front and back. For convenience, Peugeot designers have added a massive armrest with a small compartment inside.

Not to say that the new hatchback is stuffed with buttons or very spacious, but that there is enough. The designers adhered to the direction of minimalism and modern technology. They transferred the main part of the control to the central display, ranging from climate control to the management of security systems, comfort.

Regardless of the configuration of the new Peugeot 208, the salon is designed for 5 seats. If the driver and the passenger can fully sit in the front, then three passengers will sit tightly in the back and then, of average build. As for me, it is better not to count on long trips with 5 passengers, otherwise you will have to make frequent stops. Talking about the seats of the Peugeot 208, it is worth noting that the shape and design of the seats largely depend on the configuration and the unit.The front seats in the basic configuration with a high back and a good fit, as for the charged version, the front seats have a sporty character, a high back with a dedicated headrest, good, massive lateral support and a deeper seating position. Front seat adjustment will be both mechanical and electronic. Relative to the second row of the Peugeot 208, the seats do not change, and the folding ratio is always the same 60/40.

Despite such a modern interior of the Peugeot 208, the designers used high-quality, but not as expensive materials as in the previous generation for the upholstery. The customer will be offered a choice of fabric, leather and combined fabric and leather upholstery. There is practically no information on the color of the interior, but, according to some reports, it will be black, beige, gray, as well as a combination of shades to match the body color. In addition, the buyer is offered to choose plastic lining around the perimeter of the cabin or carbon fiber inserts, which is already a plus, since there was no such option before.

Finally, it is worth considering the driver's seat of the Peugeot 208. From the whole interior design, it was this part that had the most improvements and innovations. The first thing that catches your eye is the new fully digital instrument panel, based on the i-Cockpit interface. The manufacturer has not yet indicated the exact diagonal of the screen, but in all likelihood about 12.3 ″. To further attract the attention of potential buyers, the Peugeot 208 dashboard was implemented on the basis of 3D technology, which looks more efficient.

For greater effect and a sporty look, the dashboard was framed in a rectangular dashboard, which even more resembles a sports car. The main revision fell on the steering wheel of the Peugeot 208. Instead of the usual 3-spoke steering wheel, the designers made the 2nd spoke, placing the spokes in a horizontal position. The steering wheel itself received a flat shape at the top and bottom, thereby even more resembling a sports car. The central part of the steering wheel was occupied by the Peugeot emblem, function buttons on the spokes, and for greater convenience, the gearshift paddles were placed behind the wheel.

It would seem that the compact hatback Peugeot 208, which was known for the first generation sold, will not be particularly surprised with anything. But, the manufacturer decided to surprise everyone by presenting an upgraded new version. In addition to the nice appearance, sitting in the hatchback salon, you feel like in an expensive sports car, where you immediately want to press the gas pedal. By the way, there are also changes under the hood and there is something to be surprised about.

Specifications of the new Peugeot 208

As I said, the Peugeot 208 buyer will be offered a gasoline, diesel and all-electric hatchback option. If it is clear with diesel and gasoline, there is nothing particularly refined or unusual, then we will consider the electric version in more detail.

The basis for the new Peugeot 208 2019 was the CMP / e-CMP platform, thanks to which the total body weight was reduced by 30 kg. This change led to an improvement in aerodynamic performance, as well as to reduce noise and improve comfort in the cabin. As a result of such improvements, the manufacturer managed to finalize the body and interior design, as well as present an electric version of the hatchback.

In parallel with the diesel and gasoline Peugeot 208 2019, engineers were developing a fully electric version of the hatchback. The heart of the novelty was a 50 kWh battery, while sitting perfectly under the floor of the car, thanks to which the interior retained space and did not become smaller.

The Peugeot 208 electric motor is in no way inferior to the diesel and gasoline counterparts, and I can say that it is even more powerful. The power of the electric motor is 136 horses, and the maximum torque is 280 Nm. The hatchback is only front-wheel drive, without any options. Thanks to this, the electric hatchback can overcome the first hundred on the speedometer in 8.1 seconds. According to the manufacturer, on one full charge of the battery, Pyzhik will be able to travel 340 km (according to the WLTP standard).

It will take about 16 hours to fully charge the battery from a regular household outlet. If you have a special 100 kW charging terminal, then you can easily charge the battery up to 80% in 30 minutes. Despite two such charging options for the Peugeot 208, the manufacturer offers an intermediate wall charger Wall Box, it is also single-phase 7.4 kW. This Wall Box can fully charge the battery in 8 hours.

If we take into account the charging of the Wall Box, but for 3 phases (11 kW), then 100% battery charge can be reached in a maximum of 5 hours. In addition to a pleasant set of charges, the new electric hatchback Peugeot 208 offers the driver to choose one of three travel options (Eco, Normal or Sport), thereby deciding what the power consumption will be, as well as one of the proposed options for energy recovery.

Well, as for me, for such a compact hatchback, these are not at all bad technical characteristics and in all likelihood they will be improved, since the manufacturer has already made a reservation about this. It is enough that the new Peugeot 208 is equipped with an energy recovery system, which will significantly save on battery charging.

Peugeot 208 safety and comfort

The most surprising thing was not the design and not the modern interior of the Peugeot 208, but how many assistants and security systems the engineers managed to fit on board the hatchback. The list of new items includes:

• electromechanical handbrake;
• adaptive cruise control;
• Stop and Go function (for automatic transmission);
• lane keeping assistant;
• parking assistant (full control without driver intervention);
• pedestrian / cyclist detection system;
• driver monitoring system;
• automatic high beam control;
• traffic sign recognition system;
• blind spot monitoring;
• package of airbags.

As for me, this is not a complete list of safety and comfort systems that will be located on board the new Peugeot 208. According to the manufacturer, a couple more assistants for the driver, as well as comfort systems, will appear in the list. Most likely it will be a Wi-Fi access point, a Bluetooth system, access and control using a smartphone, etc. I would say that the new Peugeot 208 hatchback was not just updated, but significantly modernized, since such a list cannot always be seen even in premium cars.

Price and configuration Peugeot 208

Despite the manufacturer's statements in Geneva that the start of sales of the new Peugeot 208 2019-2020 in Europe is expected not earlier than the fall of 2019, in some EU countries it has already entered dealerships. There is also a well-known exact list of complete sets that will be available to the buyer, but the price is still known only for some of them.

In total, the buyer will be offered 5 basic configurations to choose from:

1. Access;
2. Active;
3. Allure;
4. GT Line;
5. GT.

Also, a separate version of the all-electric hatchback Peugeot 208 with the index e (Peugeot e-208). According to preliminary information, the starting price of the basic configuration will cost from 14,000 euros. As for the territory of Russia and neighboring countries, in all likelihood, the appearance of a new hatchback should be expected not earlier than the beginning of winter 2019. The manufacturer Peugeot promised to take into account the climatic conditions of the Russian Federation and to maximize the characteristics and suspension of the hatchback, they also promise the appearance of a warm package for the diesel configuration. As for me, the new Peugeot 208 freshened up quite well. The new design and modern interior, coupled with a sporty character, will play a positive role in the further reputation of the car.The main question remains in the engines, how well they will declare themselves in combination with manual and automatic transmissions. Another plus is, of course, the appearance of a fully electric version, which was not previously available and was not planned. A compact hatchback, stylish design and at the same time economical, since you can charge it at home from a regular outlet.
